About the University of Maryland Sailing Team

The Maryland Sailing Team is a club organization affiliated with the University of Maryland, College Park. We are a nationally recognized program that competes in the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) southern division, on the east coast. In addition we compete in separate events such as the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, making all attempts to compete at a variety of levels. We sail our fleet of FJs out of Severn Sailing Association in Eastport, directly across from the U.S. Naval Academy. Annapolis is known as one of the best sailing sites in the U.S. and certainly lives up to its reputation in terms of high competition and great sailing conditions.

Similar to many sailing teams across the nation, we do not have a paid coach. Instead we coach ourselves, utilizing the vast coaching experience that many members have from summer jobs in order to both teach new sailors how to compete and to improve our regatta performance. Although many of our sailors are competitive racers, we also have members that join to utilize our “learn to sail” program. We hold a novice practice at least once a week, where our experienced sailors teach new or novice members the basics of sailing and competing.
