2017-2018 UMD Veterans Scholars
Aaron Anderson

Aaron Anderson is a 7 year veteran of the Army and was deployed to Iraq for the better part of a year. It was after that deployment that he decided he wanted to use his language skills to help solve problems before military action is required. He graduated from Maryland with a Bachelor’s degree in Government and Politics and a certificate in the Persian Flagship program. He also has earned a graduate certificate in TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language). He is currently finishing his Master’s degree in Public Policy and serving as the Acting Coordinator for Veteran Student Life! He hopes to combine his passions for language and public policy with the ultimate goal of becoming a Foreign Service officer.

Jaime Hetzler

Jaime Hetzler has her Bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Delaware and is now working on her MBA from the Smith School of Business. With 12 years of service in the Army, Jaime deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom twice. She currently works in the food service industry but wants to eventually move into the school system to mentor children and to work to promote a healthy diet in our education arena. She should know with three children of her own!

Jose Githens

Jose Githens is an 8 year Veteran of the US Army with two deployments - one to Iraq and another to Kuwait. A Maryland native, Jose received the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal among others. He is married with a young daughter, he is working on an undergraduate degree in Physics and expects to graduate in May 2018. He hopes to continue his education in the field of engineering eventually earning a terminal degree. He volunteers at his daughter's school and is a member of the Physics Society on campus.

Suham is currently a student in the Graduate Terrorism Analysis program at The Study for Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at UMD. In conjunction with this program he continues to advance his study of the Arabic language. He advocates for student veterans as a Graduate Assistant with Veteran Student Life. He also performs community outreach by assisting those who face challenges due to language barriers.

Matthew Sabbe recently moved to Maryland from Louisiana where here supported the Army for the last five years as a contractor with SAIC. He is a Minnesota native and attended the University of Minnesota earning degrees in Biology and Psychology. He joined the Active Duty Army in 2006, earning an Associate's Degree in Arabic Studies in 2007 and served for a year in Iraq with the 504th BFSB out of Fort Hood, Texas. He now works as a federal employee for the Department of Defense. He is currently pursuing an MBA degree with aspirations of attaining leadership positions in his organization and starting a real estate business.

Brittany Carty

Born in southern NJ, Brittany went to IUP starting her college career in 2006. In the summer of 2009 she graduated from the police academy and started work as a law enforcement officer. In 2010 she joined the military where she served 6 years as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician. Brittany is currently working to finish her degree in UMD's criminology criminal justice system program. She is hopeful in gaining employment with the ATFE, where she can use her extensive knowledge of explosives to help stop terrorism and future attacks in the United States.

Chris Rand

Christopher Rand is a proud veteran of the US Navy. During his nine and a half year career he was stationed for 5 years on-board the USS Gettysburg and 2 years on-board the USS Carney where he completed a total of 5 deployments including 3 to the Middle East. On-board both vessels he served as an Aegis Fire Controlman, who's duties include mainlining and operating the ship's Aegis weapon system. Active in the TerpVets organization and a board member on the Student Conduct Committee, Christopher is majoring in Electrical Engineering with the hopes to continue to work on either missile defense systems or power systems.

Steven Jennings

Steven Jennings is a veteran of the US Army having served for almost 10 years with two deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. He is currently working on his Master’s degree in Hispanic Applied Linguistics having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from McDaniel College. Steven currently teaches high school Spanish and hopes to become a Nationally Board Certified Teacher and to have a positive impact on his students.
